  • The minimum grade required to transfer a course to George Brown College for Continuing Education, certificate and diploma programs is a “C-” or better (where “C-” equals 60% or higher) at an accredited postsecondary institution. For degree programs, from a completed certificate or diploma level course at an accredited community college/institute of technology the minimum grade required is a “B” or better (where “B” equals 70% or higher) and from a completed degree level course at an accredited postsecondary institution the minimum grade required is a “C” or better (where “C” equals 60% or higher).

    Additionally, you must meet the minimum grade required for the specific course in the program to be granted transfer credit and have the credit used in the program requirements. The minimum grade is the higher of the George Brown College standard as described above or program course requirement, for example “B” in some Health Science programs. George Brown College reserves the right to assess transfer credits on an individual basis and to make such changes in rules, regulations, and policies as may be required.

  • George Brown College awards advanced standing, specified (equivalencies) and unspecified credits, and General Education and English elective credits in recognition of previous learning.

  • The amount of transfer credit you can receive is limited by George Brown College’s residency policy.  The policy states that in order to graduate from a George Brown College program at least 25% of the credits in a program of study must be completed at the College, with the exception of Continuing Education certificates, which require 50% of credits be completed at George Brown College.

  • George Brown College will generally consider courses completed within the past 5 years for transfer credit. However, in some cases courses can become outdated due to new regulations/laws or advances in technology. In addition, the validity of some courses is limited due to association regulations-RNAO, CGA, HRPA, etc.

  • Follow these steps in order to receive your PLAR assessment at George Brown College:

    • On your own, or with the guidance of a faculty member or Entry Advisor, choose the courses for which you would like to seek PLAR credits.
    • Complete the formal pre-screening process with George Brown College’s PLAR Facilitator to explore your suitability for PLAR. The PLAR Facilitator will fill out the Pre-Screen Document with you, which will outline your previous learning experiences and their connection to course learning outcomes.
    • If you determine, through the pre-screening process that you may have sufficient prior learning experiences to continue with the formal PLAR process, you will be asked to complete the PLAR application form (http://www.georgebrown.ca/plar/).
    • Once the PLAR application form has been submitted, you will be contacted by the PLAR Facilitator within two weeks to arrange an assessment. A Subject Matter Expert will determine the method of assessment.
    • You will complete the assessment. The assessment must be completed within 3 months of submission of your PLAR application form.
    • Once the assessment is complete, it will be evaluated by the Subject Matter Expert. You will be assigned a grade (with the exception of Pass/Fail courses). The Registration Department will record your grade.
  • The current PLAR Application Fee for the 2023 - 2024 Academic Year is $115.20.

  • Transfer credits will be recorded on your George Brown College transcript as either "EX" for exempted (transfer credit) courses or "AS" for advanced standing and will not be included in GPA calculation. Transfer credits will be used to meet program requirements, where eligible.

  • Follow these steps in order to receive your transfer credit assessment at George Brown College:

    Advanced Standing

    • Complete your ontariocolleges.ca application form as follows: In section A, under the heading Additional Academic Information, check off the box marked College/University Transfer. Include all relevant documents. In section B, indicate the semester or level you are applying to enter.

    Transfer Credit

    • Apply for admission to George Brown College.
    • Receive and accept your offer of admission from George Brown College.
    • Register in the course(s) for which you are applying for transfer credit. This way if your application for transfer credit is not granted you will be properly registered in your required courses. Attend all classes until transfer credit has been granted.
    • Complete the application form online.
    • Ensure all appropriate supporting documentation has been submitted to assist in the evaluation of your application. This would include an official transcript showing the mark(s) obtained for the course(s) you are applying to for transfer credit, as well as the corresponding course description(s) and outline(s).
    • The appropriate program/coordinator/course instructor will evaluate your application. If your application for transfer credit has been approved you will receive an e-mail directing you to return to the web based application to accept the offered transfer credit.
  • There is no fee required for a transfer credit assessment at George Brown College.

  • The documentation required to have your previously completed postsecondary education assessed for transfer credit at George Brown College includes: 

    • Official transcript(s) : Where education is international, evaluated transcripts are required
    • Course outline(s)
    • Completed online application form
  • Complete the online application form at George Brown College:

  • Apply to transfer credit at George Brown College once you are registered in your program. Applications will continue to be accepted until the first day of class.

  • A transfer credit decision at George Brown College will take a few weeks to process. Academic Divisions are required to have all transfer credit applications evaluated by the end of the first week of classes. The status of current transfer credit applications can be viewed on Stu-View.

  • A transfer credit decision can be reviewed/appealed at George Brown College by contacting the appropriate Academic Division.
