The minimum grade required to transfer a course to Lakehead University for college applicants is 70% or “B” in diploma level courses. For university applicants, a minimum grade of 60% or “C” must be achieved in degree level courses.

Types of Credit Awarded

Provides students with the types of credit awarded and a brief definition of each (advanced standing, block, exemptions, equivalencies, specified, unspecified, generic, etc.).

Lakehead University awards specified (equivalencies) and unspecified credits in recognition of previous learning. Wherever possible, if the course content is the same, direct specific equivalencies are awarded. 

Residency Requirements

Provides students with the amount of study they must complete in order to be awarded the credential in which they are enrolled.

The amount of transfer credit you can receive is limited by Lakehead University’s residency policy. The policy states at least the last full year of a student’s program (a minimum of 5 full-course equivalents) must be completed at Lakehead University.  

Currency/Timing of Previous Postsecondary Education

Provides students with an indicator of the currency required to utilize their previously completed postsecondary education for transfer credit.

Lakehead University will consider all courses for transfer credit, regardless of currency, with the exception of highly technical and professional programs. The appropriate Faculty will determine if transfer credit is granted for courses not recently completed. Undergraduate Admissions will facilitate this process for applicants.

Appearance of Awarded Transfer Credit(s) on Transcript

Provides students with the code(s) used to record transfer credits on their transcript and an indication of whether these credits will be included in GPA calculation.

Transfer credits will be recorded on your Lakehead University transcript as "ADV" and will not be included in GPA calculation. The credit weight will also appear (i.e. 0.5 FCE, 1.0 FCE etc.). Transfer Credit Procedures/Steps

Provides students with the procedures/steps they must follow in order to receive a transfer credit assessment.

Follow these steps in order to receive your transfer credit assessment at Lakehead University:

  • After applying to Lakehead University send Enrolment Services – Undergraduate Admissions a copy of your official transcript(s) as well as copies of institutionally prepared course descriptions. Your transcript(s) can be sent to Enrolment Services from your home institution, or from the OUAC using their transcript request functionality on the OUAC 105 application. All course descriptions can be scanned and e-mailed to Upon receipt of your transcripts and course descriptions, a transfer credit assessment will be conducted.
  • If you are applying to a program in which we have a multilateral or articulation agreement, course descriptions are not required as part of your application submission.
  • If you are currently in-progress with courses, a transfer credit evaluation will still occur for the courses you have completed to date. Once a final official transcript has been received, a final transfer credit evaluation will be completed. Once a transfer credit evaluation has been completed, you will be notified via your Lakehead University e-mail account. Transfer Credit Costs

Provides students with the cost of completing a transfer credit assessment (advanced standing, exemption, etc.).

A transfer credit assessment at Lakehead University costs $60.00 (document evaluation fee) at the time of application. 

Transfer Credit Required Documentation

Provides students with a listing of the documentation they must submit to have their previously completed postsecondary education assessed for transfer credit.

The documentation required to have your previously completed postsecondary education assessed for transfer credit at Lakehead University includes:  

  •    Official transcript(s) 

  •    Course description(s)  (exception: not in the case of multilateral or articulation agreements)          

  •    Language proficiency requirements may be required  

  •    Additional program-specific information (consent form and reference letter for Nursing applicants, audition and theory test for Music applicants, portfolio for Media, Film and Communications applicants) 

Transfer Credit Application Form(s)

Provides students with a copy of the transfer credit application form or link to the online submission tool (where applicable).

A transfer credit application form is not required at Lakehead University. Applicants who have previously attended a postsecondary institution are automatically assessed for transfer credit once all required documentation has been received. 

Deadline(s) for Application

Provides students with the deadline by which they must apply for transfer credit.

Apply to transfer credit at Lakehead University by March 1st in order to ensure that your assessment is finalized before course registration opens. Applications will still be accepted after this date for most programs. 

Timing of Transfer Credit Decisions

Provides students with an expectation regarding the time it takes to process a transfer credit decision.

A transfer credit decision at Lakehead University will take a minimum of 3 weeks from the date of receipt of all documentation (i.e. official transcripts, course descriptions) to process.
