The minimum grade required to transfer a course to Georgian College is 60%, “C” or higher. Exceptions apply when the minimum grade required in a course for a particular program is higher.

Types of Credit Awarded

Provides students with the types of credit awarded and a brief definition of each (advanced standing, block, exemptions, equivalencies, specified, unspecified, generic, etc.).

Georgian offers individual and block credit transfers and advanced standing depending on previous and future program compatibility. PLARs (Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition) for some courses may also be considered.

Residency Requirements

Provides students with the amount of study they must complete in order to be awarded the credential in which they are enrolled.

The amount of transfer credit you can receive is limited by Georgian College’s residency policy. The policy states that at least 25% of credits in a certificate of achievement, a minimum of 1 semester or 25% of credits (whichever is greater) in a certificate or 1-3 year diploma, and 25% of credits in a 4 year degree must be completed at the College.

Currency/Timing of Previous Postsecondary Education

Provides students with an indicator of the currency required to utilize their previously completed postsecondary education for transfer credit.

Some programs have specific currency requirements that may affect the outcome of the transfer credit assessment.

PLAR Procedures/Steps

Provides students with the procedures/steps they must follow in order to receive a PLAR assessment.

Follow these steps in order to receive your PLAR assessment at Georgian College:

To apply for a PLAR assessment:

  1. Accept your Georgian College offer of admission and pay your deposit
  2. Contact the program coordinator for further information regarding course outlines and to determine eligibility
  3. Review the course outlines to see if your knowledge and skills match the learning outcomes of the course
  4. Collect your supporting documents (if required). These may include: your resume, a letter describing your experiences and learning that relate to the course you are challenging, work samples and letters of verification from past employers or academic faculty
  5. Complete the PLAR request form and gather the appropriate supporting documentation discussed with your program coordinator or academic designate
  6. Pay the PLAR application fee
  7. Submit your completed PLAR form and supporting documentation to the Credit Transfer Team

PLAR Costs

Provides students with the cost of completing a PLAR assessment (challenge exam, course challenge, portfolio, etc.).

The fee for a PLAR assessment is $131.00 per course (2019-2020 academic year, subject to change). This fee is non-refundable even if the PLAR assessment is not successful. Not all courses are eligible for PLAR. Check the official course outline for eligibility .

Appearance of Awarded Transfer Credit(s) on Transcript

Provides students with the code(s) used to record transfer credits on their transcript and an indication of whether these credits will be included in GPA calculation.

Transfer credits will be recorded on your Georgian College transcript as "EX" and will not be included in GPA calculation.

Transfer Credit Procedures/Steps

Provides students with the procedures/steps they must follow in order to receive a transfer credit assessment.

The steps to apply for Transfer Credits at Georgian are as follows:

  1. Complete the Individual and Block Transfer Credit form
  2. Provide official transcripts if Georgian does not have them already
  3. Provide detailed course outlines/syllabi to support your application
  4. Submit your form at the Office of the Registrar for assessment
  5. Pay the credit transfer fee.

Transfer Credit Costs

Provides students with the cost of completing a transfer credit assessment (advanced standing, exemption, etc.).

Credits transferred to Georgian cost $50 each or $100 for two or more.

Transfer Credit Required Documentation

Provides students with a listing of the documentation they must submit to have their previously completed postsecondary education assessed for transfer credit.

Please provide an official transcript that includes the courses to be assessed as well as detailed course outlines and syllabi.

Provides students with a copy of the transfer credit application form or link to the online submission tool (where applicable).

Deadline(s) for Application

Provides students with the deadline by which they must apply for transfer credit.

It is recommended that students submit the request form, payment and supporting documents 60 days prior to the start of the first semester in order to guarantee assessment by the program start date.  

Timing of Transfer Credit Decisions

Provides students with an expectation regarding the time it takes to process a transfer credit decision.

A transfer credit decision at Georgian College may take up to 5 weeks to process. However, if the request is more complex, processing time may take longer.

Review/Appeal Procedures

Provides students with the process for appealing a transfer credit decision.

The result of a transfer credit evaluation is final and is not subject to appeal.
